How do you prepare real flowers that will be placed on a wedding cake?

Rodnie A asked:

I’ve been asked to use real hydrangeas on a wedding cake that I will make and I just want to know if there is a proper method to prepare the flowers for arrangement on the cake. I don’t want to just cut the stems and stick the flower in the cake. I’m being mindful of the fact that the cake will most definitely be consumed. I don’t want the wedding guests to get sick.
